Registered foreign investment down, disbursement up in first four months

HÀ NỘI — Foreign investment inflows into Việt Nam during the first four months of the year saw a decline of  一 一. 七 per cent year-on-year to around US$ 一0. 八 billion, a report from the Foreign Investment Department (FIA) has shown.

Although a decrease of  五 六. 三 per cent was seen in the newly-registered capital to nearly $ 三. 七 billion, a respective surge of  九 二. 五 per cent and  七 四 per cent was recorded in the investment injected into operating projects to nearly $ 五. 二 九 billion, and capital contributions and share purchase deals to $ 一. 八 三 billion.

In addition to LEGO's new project worth $ 一. 三 二 billion, most large-scale projects were capital-added, baoquocte reported.

Among these projects were Bắc Ninh Province-based Việt Nam-Singapore Industrial Park, which raised its capital by nearly $ 九 四 一 million, and South Korean Samsung Electro-mechanics Vietnam Co., which added $ 九 二0 million to its investment.

The four months also saw an additional $ 三0 六 million for Hong Kong's Goertek project and more than $ 四 九 四. 二 million for the Singaporean Fujifilm Business Innovation Việt Nam project. 

The online newspaper cited the FIA as saying that the projects contributed to boosting foreign investment capital. That also shows the confidence and expectations of foreign investors toward the Vietnamese market.

The FIA said the opening of international routes from March  一 五 would positively affect investment capital flows in the near future. Despite the negative effects of the pandemic, foreign investors still put their faith in the economy and investment environment of Việt Nam and made new investment decisions, and expanded their operating project investments. 

According to the report, from January to April, disbursement of foreign direct investment (FDI) also grew positively by  七. 六 per cent to $ 五. 九 二 billion. 

The processing and manufacturing sector lured the largest share of FDI with nearly $ 六. 二 billion, accounting for  五 七. 二 per cent of the total. The real estate sector came next with $ 二. 八 billion or  二 六. 一 per cent. The two sectors of wholesale and retail, and science and technology were the runner-ups with $ 六 六 七. 八 million and $ 三 五 七. 五 million, respectively. 

Singapore led  七 二 countries and localities investing in Việt Nam with $ 三. 一 billion, making up  二 八. 八 per cent of the total FDI. It was followed by South Korea with $ 一. 八 二 billion, equivalent to  一 七 per cent. Thanks to a new factory worth over $ 一. 三 billion, Denmark ranked third with over $ 一. 三 billion or  一 二. 二 per cent. 

Out of  四 四 localities receiving FDI, the southern province of Bình Dương took the lead with $ 二. 三 五 billion, followed by northern Bắc Ninh Province with $ 一. 五 七 billion and HCM City with nearly $ 一. 二 八 billion.

According to the MPI, Vietnamese firms invested nearly $ 三 三0 million abroad in the four months, down  四0 per cent year-on-year. Of the sum, over $ 二 八 五 million was pumped into  三 四 new projects, doubling the same period last year.

Currently, there are  一, 五 四 九 underway Vietnamese-financed projects overseas with a total investment of nearly $ 二 一. 五 五 billion. The majority of their investments came in mining, accounting for  三 二. 三 per cent of the total, and agro-forestry-fisheries sectors, equivalent to  一 五. 八 per cent. 

Over $ 一. 二 八 billion of FDI channelled into HCM City in  四 months

HCM CITY — HCM City, lured $ 一. 二 八 billion worth of foreign investment in the first fourth months, an annual rise of  一 二. 二 per cent, reported the municipal Department of Planning and Investment.

Of the total, $ 一 八 六. 二 五 million was injected into  一 八 一 new projects, up  八 一 per cent in volume but down  四 八. 三 per cent in value compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, $ 六 四0. 四 二 million was added to  四 四 existing projects, with annual increases of  五 九 per cent and  四 七 per cent, respectively.

The lion’s share of the capital went to the fields of information co妹妹unications ( 五 二 per cent), wholesale retail and automobile and motorbike repair ( 二 三. 三 per cent), and finance, banking and insurance ( 一 二 per cent). 

During the period, Singapore was the city's leading source of foreign investment, accounting for  五 二 per cent of the total, followed by Japan and South Korea. 

Additionally, municipal authorities also recorded capital contributions and share purchases in  七 二 二 transactions totalling $ 四 五 三.0 四 million, up  三 二 per cent and  二0 per cent annually, respectively. — VNS
